Frankenweenie is a 2012 3D stop motion sci-fi family film directed by Tim Burton. It is a remake of Burton's 1984 short film of the same name and is a parody of and an homage to the 1931 film Frankenstein based on Mary Shelley's book of the same name. Like both those films, Frankenweenie is in black and white. It is also the fourth stop-motion film produced by Burton and the first of those four that isn't a musical. In the film, a boy named Victor loses his dog, named Sparky, and uses the power

We watched Frankenweenie last night (I explained to the kids that some parts would be sad or scary and they voted to try it) and both during the movie and this morning it was interesting to see what they had picked up. I don’t think Tim Burton was trying to teach my kids about the literature and movies of the horror genre, or offer them life lessons, but Frankenweenie opened up opportunities to talk about these things.

Spoilers below. Have I seen it before: Yes. Did I like it then: Yes. Do I remember it: Yes. Did I see it in theaters: Yes. Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes. #188. Format: Blu-ray. 1) This film was based on a live action short film Tim Burton made of the same name from 1984. Burton was fired from Disney for “wasting” their resources on that film and others which they deemed too scary for family viewing. They still released it on VHS after Burton became famous (a censored version, at least). The The Nightmare Before Christmas DVD has the short’s first uncensored appearance on home video. 2) The reactions Victor’s parents have (enthusiasm, mainly, and embarrassing parental love) is very accurate to whenever a young filmmaker shows a movie they made to their parents. I should know. I am painfully familiar with that feeling. But without it they wouldn’t be encouraged to continue in their trade. 3) Victor’s Father (voiced by Martin Short in a rare straight man performance) is concerned that Victor might become “weird” since he doesn’t have many friends outside of his dog and spends most of his time making movies and inventing. To any parent concerned about this: If you’re kid is happy and not a jerk, then there’s nothing to worry about. 4) Martin Short actually voices three characters in the film, the second of which is Mr. Burgermeister. Outside of Mr. Frankenstein, Short is unrecognizable in both this role and his other (that of the stu...
