Flat-Out Fishing Returns to Lake Jackson Saturday, February 9
I have, for several years, had the privilege of emceeing the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Upper Coast Flat-Out Fishing Seminar in Lake Jackson. This year marks the series’ fifth event, and the fourth at which I have been a presenter and emcee. Based on the continued interest and participation in seminars past, next Saturday, February 9, promises to deliver an entertaining and informative event … one whose proceeds go to another highly successful TPWD event, the annual Crab Trap Cleanup Program.
Via that program, 22,746 abandoned crab traps have been removed from Texas flats to date. Countless crabs, fish and nongame species have benefited vastly from the volunteer clean-up program, and I will post an announcement regarding this year’s event within the next week.
Also conducted in Corpus Christi under the auspices of TPWD Coastal Fisheries Outreach Specialist Art Morris (the sold-out Corpus event was held yesterday), the Flat-Out Fishing seminar series is an affordably-priced bona fide family event. The Upper Coast seminar will again be held at the Lake Jackson Civic Center, located at 333 Hwy. 332 East in Lake Jackson.
The cost is a modest $20 per person or $30 per couple, payable by cash, check or money order at the door. Registration fees are tax-deductible, and children under the age of 17 may attend at no additional charge if accompanied by an adult.
“Flat-Out Fishing is a full day of professional fishing seminars that will help improve the skills of everyone, whether they are beginners or experienced fishermen,” Morris explains. “The setting is relaxed and friendly, and it offers plenty of opportunities for interaction with the speakers.” As for the speakers, Morris notes that they represent “some of the most knowledgeable authorities in their field in Texas.”
Indeed they do.
I took a look at the logistics of including the entire Lake Jackson Flat-Out Fishing seminar program in this post, but realized it would constitute a total of 13 pages. However, if you would like to see an Adobe PDF copy of the program, including speaker profiles and topics as well as presentation times, drop me an email (larry@coastalanglers.com) and I will gladly forward it to you as an attachment. You can also get this information, or go ahead and get registration taken care of, by contacting Art Morris via phone at 361-825-3356, or sending email to art.morris@tpwd.state.tx.us.
Flat-Out Fishing is underwritten by Anheuser-Busch and is sponsored by CCA Texas, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, Shimano, I.F. Anderson Farms/Black Salty Baitfish, Blakemore/TTI/Daiichi Hooks, CoastalAnglers.com and others. (As I receive a finalized list of sponsors, as well as any other details, I will make posts accordingly prior to the event.) A broad spectrum of sponsors will be present and showing their wares at the event, and thanks to their generosity all attendants receive a “goody bag” upon arrival.
Saturday, Feb. 9 is just around the corner. Again, this event has gained significant momentum over the years. Since seating is limited, and available on a first-come/first-served basis, if you’d like to attend this year’s seminar it’s highly advisable you make reservations immediately.
A brief rundown of the speakers in attendance includes: Capt. Frank Kuban (Long-Range Tuna Trips); TPWD Ecosystem Leader Bill Balboa of the TPWD Coastal Fisheries Division (Sargassum); Capt. Charles Foster of Blue Chip Charters (Amberjack); Outdoor Writer Chester Moore (Flounder); Outdoor Writer Lefty Ray Chapa of Kayak4Redfish.com (Fly Fishing); Jeff Herman (Ocean Kayak Pro Staff) and Yours Truly, putting on a presentation about Jetty Fishing and, if time allows, a bit of knot-tying advice.
The event begins at 8:00 a.m. with Morris’ opening remarks and concludes at 5:00 p.m. with my Jetty Fishing seminar.
I hope you can make it. Aside from benefiting a wonderful conservation program, you will … I assure you … leave this event a much better educated coastal angler.
Howdy. I am
