Rockport’s Skimmer Birdwatching and Kayaking Boat Finds Season’s First Whooping Cranes
Avid birders, take note:
According to Capt. Tommy Moore, operator of the Rockport-based birdwatching boat, the Skimmer, the annual migration of whooping cranes to the Coastal Bend is underway.
“The front Friday morning brought the ‘Lobstick’ family of whoopers to their territory, right on schedule,” Moore reports. “And once again, they have a juvenile.![]()
“These are pretty much the first pair that you will see on the whooping crane tours to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge,” Moore says. “They are usually among the first whooping cranes to show up in late October, and they are really easy to see, as their territory is a thin peninsula along the Intracoastal Waterway.”
Adds Moore, passengers on the popular touring boat are also seeing a broad spectrum of shorebird species, including white pelicans, marbled godwits, longbilled curlews, Wilson’s plovers, ospreys, “huge clouds” of pintail and redhead ducks, black bellied plovers, white and dark morph reddish egrets, immature little blue herons and (pictured here) roseate spoonbills.
The 40-foot Skimmer affords not only an affordable and effective venue for birdwatching and bird photography; Moore and crew also run kayaking trips (rentals, or take your own for a fee) for bothbirdwatchers and anglers. Fishermen can enjoy some awesome opportunities to fish the highly productive shoreline of San José Island on Aransas Bay at this time of year.
