Copano Bay Redfish Going Strong
Capt. Chris Fortin of Play’N Hooky Charters in Rockport, Texas reported limits of redfish on Monday, October 16th. “We were fishing live shrimp under corks or freelining them around Newcomb Bend and Turtle Bend on Copano Bay,” Fortin says. “It’s really been cool,” Fortin says. “If we had gotten the rain that Houston got this week, we would be out on the back lakes tomorrow. However, we didn’t get the rain, so the existing game plan is to fish the mouths of sloughs with live shrimp, Black Saltys or some other baitfish rigged just off the bottom in one to two feet of water.”
“Find the baitfish and you will find the reds,” Fortin explains. “The bait is scattered, but when you find it … and it doesn’t take a lot … the action is pretty steady.” Fortin runs duck hunts throughout the season, and reports that the Copano Bay area is already witnessing some pretty good numbers of teal (which showed up in September), joined recently by primarily gadwall and widgeon. “There are loads of gadwall,” Fortin says, “flocks of 25 to 30 birds at a time. They are feeding on shallow-water vegetation.”
